UPGRADING SALTASH TUNNEL

The A38 Saltash Tunnel was opened in 1988 and was constructed to take the A38 London - Penzance trunk road beneath the town of Saltash. The tunnel is a single bore three lane bi-directional tunnel of bored construction, orientated roughly Northwest to Southeast, and lies between the South Pill Junction and the Fore Street Junction to the West and East of Saltash respectively. The central lane operates as a tidal flow lane, which uses gantry signals and illuminated road studs to indicate direction of travel. The tunnel is approximately 410 metres long.
