Rotherhithe and Blackwall Survey Works

Rotherhithe and Blackwall Southbound Survey Works

Contract Value £1.1m
Following a competitive tender submission direct to Transport for London (TfL) in August 2017, VVB were successfully awarded a survey contract for two of London’s key river crossing tunnels. The contract, which is worth £1.1m, is the first road tunnel works where our teams are working in the role of Principal Contractor. The works are an essential activity, the findings of which will set the budget and support the scoping and design activities for the future refurbishment works.
The project entails the surveying, inspection and testing of the mechanical, electrical and communications systems in the Rotherhithe and Blackwall Southbound tunnels. Each tunnel has a sub-tunnel that requires surveying and therefore confined space training was undertaken for the operatives and dedicated rescue teams are on hand each time the project team enter the sub-tunnel.

These surveys are to determine the condition and life expectancy of the existing systems, so that a detailed refurbishment feasibility report can be produced as well as costs associated with these refurbishments.

The small works team have since mobilised and commenced with works at the Rotherhithe tunnel, which began on 13th November 2017 within a three-week window to survey the tunnel and its sub-tunnel during night closures.

The survey works at Blackwall commenced on 5th December 2017. All survey works were completed by the 18th January 2018, with project completion and hand-over of documentation by the end of March 2018.

The report being prepared by the project team will inform decisions for TfL in applying for project funding for the refurbishment works. Once funding is approved TfL will tender for the refurbishment package, which is expected to occur in Autumn 2018.
