A4232 Queens Gate Tunnel Maintenance

VVB Engineering appointed by Cardiff City Council for maintenance of the Queens Gate tunnel in Butetown under a three year NEC3 Term Service contract, covering design, supply, installation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment and infrastructure.

The A4232 is a 19.6km dual carriageway road linking parts of Cardiff to other major routes, such as the A48 and the M4 amongst others. The route has four large viaducts, two spur roads and one 725m twin bore cut and cover tunnel, running underneath southern Butetown, which handles 14,000,000 vehicles per annum.

The maintenance contract covers the design, supply, installation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment and infrastructure for the continued control and management of the Queens Gate tunnel and its related services.

  • A470 Tidal Flow
  • UPS Maintenance
  • Nitrogen Foam System
  • Generator Maintenance
  • Main Drainage and Fire Defence Maintenance
  • Structural Principal Inspection
  • Environmental Plant Control Monitoring System
  • Variable Message Sign System (VMSS)

As part of the maintenance contract a fan replacement work package is included involving the decommissioning of the seventy two existing fans and replacing with sixty four increased efficiency jet fans.
